Public Service Vehicles

There is evidence to suggest that the Maxi was used as an ambulance, taxi and police car.

Some years ago one of our members (Kevin Stephens) discovered the following photographs/ facts at the British Motor Industry Heritage Centre at Gaydon in Warwickshire. Here's part of what he wrote in the club magazine in 2001:

"I have spent the last couple of years or so researching non-standard and famous Maxi liveries and have discovered the following photographs in the Gaydon archives. One or two are better known, but most were a surprise even to the very helpful Gaydon staff ........ all are in black and white ...... I've run H.P.I. vehicle checks to find the vehicle colour, model and year of manufacture where possible:

1. Ambulance: Photo of crew loading a stretcher into a white Maxi (cable gear change. Vehicle belongs to Monmouthshire County Council). Negative Number: 211354. Photographed on the 4th May 1971. Registration Number not known.

2. Police Car: Registration BVP 812 K. Car gold in colour. Blue light roof pad.

3. Special Tuning Flying Doctor with green roof lamp at Silverstone Race Track on the 8th August 1973. Negative Number 240481/1 (front view) and 240481/2 (rear view). Registration Number GJB 439 K 1750. Car Blue in colour.

I also discovered when carrying out my research that there was a taxi version of the Maxi when it was first launched at Longbridge in 1969."

webmaster: Sadly I'm unable to reproduce any of these photo's on this page, as the copyright belongs to someone else. However if you want to buy copies of them, you can do so by contacting the British Motor Heritage Centre at Gaydon in Warwickshire. Kevin says that they are about £10 each. and measure approximately 8"x6".
