Our reporter at the NEC (Pip Taylor) tells us that the club stand got another good reception thanks to the efforts of Anthony and Vicky Hall and fellow club members. Pride of place was given to Steve Ross's Maxi perched on ramps and a birthday cake ...... presumably to celebrate the fact that the Maxi was 35 years old this year.

Did you work on the Maxi at Longbridge or Cowley ?

Pip Taylor tells me that a number of people visiting the stand at this years show told him that they actually worked on the Maxi during its production run. One fellow told him that he actually made the tools for the original dashboard. It would be a tragedy if these people's stories, experiences and opinions were not told. If you worked at Longbridge or Cowley on the Maxi and would like to go into print telling the world your story please do let me know. I'd be more than happy to publish any pictures that you have of yourself, your colleagues, the production line or offices that you worked in.

A Tall story ?

During his stint on the club stand at the NEC, Pip met someone who told him that in his youth he'd borrowed his Mum's six month old Maxi, taking three friends to France, the low countries, Poland, Finland and Russia. The chap told Pip that the journey took 3 months and involved he and his friends having a series of mishaps/ adventures ........... during the journey a Russian tank crashed through the woods in front of them (which they photographed) and they met bandits. Apparently he and his friends arrived at this check-point where they were advised not to stop for 300 miles (presumably because bandits were operating in that part of the world). After three hours on rough roads they decided to brew up. Whilst doing so they were surrounded by bandits. They managed to make good their escape by sidling back into the Maxi and setting off down the track with one of the passengers holding the lid on the Primus!
webmaster: If this gentleman (whose name I don't know) would like to contact me I'd be more than happy to publish his account of that journey (including any pictures). It would certainly make lively reading.

The club stand

Every year clubs are encouraged to adopt a common theme for their stands, this year it was "The year of your car"........... in the Maxi's case this meant the 1970's......... the 10 years or so when the car was in production.

Undaunted Anthony Hall (Indoor Events Organizer) and his merry crew set about recreating a seventies showroom, complete with Supercover literature (remember it?).

As we can see from the photo's below three cars were displayed ........ a Harvest Gold 1750 owned by Steve Rose, a Damask Red 1500 owned by Pip Taylor and a Russett Brown 1750 HL owned by Les Stubbs.

To put a stand on at the NEC can be quite a labour intensive exercise...... but it can also be a lotta of fun .......... ask some of the characters below who were involved in this years effort..... take a bow folks!
