Austin Maxi Convertible Original Advert

The car opposite was advertised for sale on the club website in July/ August 2004 by its owner Paul Storey.

The advert generated so much interest that I decided to ask Paul for permission to include the photo's he'd sent me for the advert in a short feature on the website. Not only did Paul agree but he also very kindly sent me some additional photo's and words to go with them.

Specification

Austin Maxi 2 HL 1981 Custom Convertible. Converted in 1995 and finished in Rosso Red. The body has full length chassis added to underside of car with three additional lengths running to the inner sills on both sides. It has a 50mm roll frame fitted around the central pillars that extends to the rear inner wheel arches. The rear doors and tailgate have been welded to the body.

The one-piece hood is fastened by press-studs and has plastic rear and side windows with roll down curtains. The front of the hood can be rolled back and retained half way to create a sunroof. The hood frame is designed to resemble the original shape of the Maxi when upright and there is a cover which clips neatly over the hood when it is down.

To gain access to the rear, the front seat tilt forward (the same as the Mini) and the seats still recline into a bed position. Access to the boot space is from behind the rear seat.

Thirty-two year old Paul Storey comes from Stockport in Cheshire. Since passing his test in his fathers R Registration Maxi in 1989, Paul's had 4 Maxi's including the one above which he and a friend decided to turn into a convertible after they both thought it would be fun to create a "rag top" Maxi. The car was apparently on the road for two summers prior to being sold.
