In addition to the foregoing two new members were co-opted onto the Committee : Steve Rose and Jonathan Harding.
Chairman’s Report
In a wide ranging address, the outgoing Chairman, Ernie Jackson, took time out, to heap praise on ex-spares advisor Morry Cook, for his contribution to the club over the years. To quote Ernie, “without Morry there would not be a club”.
Membership/ Treasurers Report
Chris Jackson reported that membership fell again last year (as it had for most clubs). She said that in order to ensure the long term survival of the club, the Committee were currently investigating links with other clubs. Chris said that whilst club reserves continued to fall, the Club remains in a good financial state. She explained that printing, postage and insurance remained the largest costs incurred by the club.
Editors report
Editor Mark Pacey, reported that the club had just published the 100th issue of the club magazine. To celebrate the fact, Mark said that he’d prepared the first colour version of the "mag" and had asked members for 100 photo’s of their cars for insertion into it. In the end he said, he’d only received 50, but was not too disappointed. As on previous occasions, Mark asked members to continue contributing to the magazine.
Spares report
Ernie Jackson reported that he and Morry (Cook), would continue to provide members with a spares service. To this end, Ernie said that he would be visiting X-Part (ex Rover Parts contactor), to check out what Maxi spares they still had. During the AGM, mention was also made of a Swiss car dealership, which had spares for sale.
Technical Advisors Report
In a written report, Technical Advisor, Brian Winn said that he’d had relatively few requests for assistance during the year. Whilst most callers were helped, it was difficult he said to help those with little technical ability and or knowledge. Far better to get them to employ a qualified person to do the work.
Events Report
NEC :
Anthony Hall said that the clubs stand at the International Classic Car Show (at the NEC in Birmingham) had been a great success. Despite increased costs and bureaucracy, he thought the club should continue having a stand at the show because of the publicity it generated for the club.
Maximeet:
Bryan Gellett announced that this years Maximeet is being held at Bowood Country Park near Bath, in the West Country. Bryan said that this years event will be held on the 9th Sept.
Regalia
Chris and Ernie Jackson brought a selection of Tea Shirts/ Polo Shirts/ Key rings/ Binders/ Sow on patches/ Model Cars to the AGM for members to purchase. Ernie Jackson said that regalia sales had been poor during the year despite a number of price reductions.
A raffle during the AGM raised £25 towards the clubs coffers. The prize was a signed copy of Gillian Bardsley and Colin Corke's book, "Making cars at Longbridge". The book was donated by Ernie Jackson.
Webmasters report
In his report the clubs webmaster (Charles Lees) stated that he would continue to develop the site in the year ahead. He suggested that the website, compared more than favourably, with others belonging to the classic car movement.
A number of spare parts (some new), which Charles had collected over the last 18 months, were distributed to members on a first come – first served basis. The parts had been donated by the following enthusiasts:
David Lee (Bromley), Daniel McNally (Wimbledon), Richard Wells (Carlshalton).
Area Reports
A number of Area reports were submitted to members at the AGM: Kev Sharpe (Home Counties), Brian Sharpe (West County) and Denise Holloway (Southern Counties). Kev Sharpe sadly reported that Gavin Thompson had fallen seriously ill. Members will remember that Gavin (accompanied by Prince Michael of Kent) drove a Maxi in the 1970 World Cup Rally. Denise Holloway said that she would be showing her Maxi at Broadlands this year on the British Car Society’s stand, rather than a separate Maxi Club stand, which had been poorly attended last year. The AGM was also told that there would be no show at Yeovil this year.
The Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs/ Austin Federation:
Outgoing P.R. man Phil Marrison said that it was in the best interests of the club to continue to support these two federations. Amongst other things, the FBHVC acted as a pressure group in Parliament for the classic car movement.
